Glamour's Other Face

Glamour's Other Face

Susan Henderson

My sister and I are New York bound. My mother "won" tickets to some fashion awards event at the Henderson Hoedown for Wellspring charity http://citylife.nationalpost.com/2012/05/12/wellspring-henderson-hoedown.... True to her generous nature, my mom gave them to us as a special gift.

I have mixed feelings about going off to a Hollywood-type event right now. People's lives in NYC have been turned to rubble in some parts of the city. We are celebrating "glamour" while people are trying to re-build their lives - not to mention the orders piling up on my desk that my reps will have to help me with.

It feels NOT WRONG but UN-RIGHT - if you will allow me to make up a word.

To add to my angst, it is a night with Hollywood types and fashionistas and I have nothing to wear. I just checked my closet. So, I googled the event - NY's 2012 Glamour Woman of the Year - to see the dress code.

After surfing photos at all the beautiful people wearing stunning high-fashion clothes, I read about the woman being honoured. We might bump into one of them...and I should be informed. I read some more. I had completely mis read the event by glancing at inductee and pop star Selena Gomez. I knew Selena and Justin Bieber broke up but I did not know Selena gave back to people as Unicef's youngest-ever ambassador. I did not know that the 2012 Olympic team members were being inducted and that for the first time ever, woman competed in the same 36 sports as men.

Then I read about Erin Merryn. Her personal crusade to stop child abuse turned into a very public one.

“I’m really scared,” reads a passage from Erin Merryn’s diary, written when she was just 11 years old. “Something happened last night, but I don’t know who to tell.” The untellable secret: She’d been molested by an older cousin. And Merryn decided that no other child should go through what she had. http://www.glamour.com/inspired/women-of-the-year/2012/erin-merryn#ixzz2...

So, as I head to my closet once more I am not thinking about fashion but about the children that will be protected because of her. I am also excited to read her book that we will receive according to Merryn's blog, in our grab brags. http://erinmerryn.hcibooks.com

And as synchronicity appears in so many places in my life, Suetables was, at the last moment, put to the top of a waiting list for an exclusive NYC trunk show. Our rep will be at the Brick Church Fair November 13, 14 and 15 for our very first big NYC Suetables jewelry show. https://www.suetables.com/ca/upcoming-shows

NY is absolutely the right place to go right now.
